Tony and Emmy winner Bea Arthur has passed away. A family spokesman said the cause was cancer, but gave no further information.
Arthur won a Tony Award opposite Angela Lansbury in the 1966 original Broadway cast of Mame. She went on to star in the television show Maude, but became most famous for her role on the Golden Girls.
Her last role was Larry David’s mother on Curb Your Enthusiasm in a 2005 episode.

Give it back Paul!

I have a special spot of hatred in my hear for Crash. 2005 was a great year for films. Even the Academy did a great job picking the Best Picture nominees. If any of the four other nominated films won – Brokeback Mountain, Good Night and Good Luck, Munich, or my personal pick Capote – I would have been thrilled. But instead, they went and chose Crash.
But apparently Paul Haggis thinks it was all a mistake. Haggis told the Chicago Tribune, “I love the Oscars; I just think they are the best thing in the world, but if you asked me if it was the best film of the year, I’d say, ‘Of course not.’ “
We can agree there Paul.
He continued: “I happened to like my second film [In the Valley of Elah] better than Crash, but no one went to see it.”
That’s where we can’t agree. In the Valley of Elah defied my expectations and was even worse than Crash.

Broadwayworld.com is reporting that Hugh Jackman is working one two musical projects: one for the silver screen and one for Broadway.
Jackman has been in the workshopping process of the new musical about the life of Houdini. Danny Elfman is writing the music, and it is expected to be staged on Broadway in Spring of 2010. It would be Jackman’s first acting gig on Broadway since winning the Tony for The Boy from Oz.
In terms of movies, Jackman is helping rework the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical Carousel. The movie was originally made in 1956. The role of Billy Bigelow is considered one of the great musical theater roles for men, so it’ll be exciting to see Jackman take the role on.
No other cast or director has been announced but the role.
Scarlett Johansson to give a vow?

No, she’s already married (damn Ryan Reynolds)!
Broadway.com is reporting that producers are eying Scarlett Johansson for the role of Irena in the film version of the current Broadway show Irena’s Vow.
Irena’s Vow is the true story of a of a woman who saved the lives of Jews during World War II. The story is told through a flashback; Johansson would play the younger Irena. No word on who would play the modern-day version of the character, but I wouldn’t be shocked to Tovah Feldshuh take the role (she is playing the role on Broadway).

Susan Boyle offered $1 million to star in a porno

I’ve been really lazy with my blogging recently, though there hasn’t been any big film news anyways. But here’s some news of a different kind of film.
The Daily News is reporting that the Los Angeles based Kick Ass Films has offered Susan Boyle $1,000,000 to star in a porno.
“We want to get this movie shot and out while Susan has the world’s attention,” said Kick Ass boss Mark Kulkis to the Daily News. “Besides, after 47 years of virginity, I’m sure Susan is also anxious to get something cracking as soon as possible.”
She sung a song, and now LuPone endorses Susan Boyle

I think the term instant celebrity is applicable here. Only days ago, some random, never-been-kissed, Scottish church volunteer sang a song and is now quite literally internationally famous. Susan Boyle sang a great rendintion of “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical Les Miserables on the British television show Britain’s Got Talent.
Broadway World has posted a video from the CBS Early Show of Patti LuPone complimenting Boyle on her performance of of the song, one that LuPone originated.
For those who have been living under a rock, here’s the original performance. I think the look on Simon’s face says it all. He looks genuinely impressed.
And I bet she’s 50 times more talented that all those bitches that sneered at her from the audience before she started singing.

McG to bring Spring Awakening to the big screen?

Hollywood Reporter is reporting that director (and former songwriter/music video director) McG is in talks to make a film of the Tony-winning rock musical Spring Awakening.
The project is in the most infantile stages of development; there isn’t even a studio attached. McG (Charlie’s Angels, We Are Marshall, and the forthcoming Terminator Salvation) would direct and produce.
Spring Awakening is the story of teenagers in late-19th century Germany experiencing their transition from adolescence to adulthood. It closed on Broadway this past January. I definitely regret not seeing it, but I feel like it wouldn’t really be my thing anyways.
